GOverlay_Updater.exe causes Virus detection

Postby de-jo! » Sun Sep 07, 2025 3:55 pm

So till yesterday everything worked fine.
When I started the PC today, I got an error message:
Start Error.png

After restart, I got the same message. I then started the GOverlay_Updater.exe
During that process I got a Virus-detection-warning:
Virus detection.png

The Goverlay_Updater warf folgende Nachricht aus:
Goverlay_Waring.png

How can I fix the issue?

Like I said: I didn't change anything. My LCDsysinfo 3.5 worked fine with v. 1.6.9.19

System: Windows 11 Pro

In Windows-Security, the "Smart App Control" did look new to me. Maybe that's an issue. So far I didn't want to turn it off, cause it says:
"If Smart App Control is disabled, it cannot be enabled without reinstalling Windows."

I believe that this is related to the Winring0 vulnerability that has been in a very old open source library that has been used for lots of hardware monitoring software in Windows. Open Hardware Monitor is based on this library. Many anti-virus programs have begun flagging software based on this library as Trojan Horse and taking action by quarantining or deleting the flagged files. GOverlay seems to require the OpenHardwareMonitor libraries and driver or else it may not start.

If this all the same issue then this article will give an excellent explanation of what is happening:

hello,
maybe if we could get version, which does not contain openhardwaremonitorlib.dll (and sys),that does not depend on it,we can still use hwinfo or aida...

i don't really feel like using virus-prone system, and i don't understand programming enough so i could make the display bitmap-only(get rid of goverlay exe),to make it compatible with aida for example...so now i have to search for another display...

We might end up removing OHM but for now, you can tell goverlay not to use OHM at all and it should get rid of the issue, to do so:

1. Stop Goverlay
2. Open your goverlay folder, and create a new text document named “disable_ohmdll”, not need to put anything inside the file, just hit save, and a file “disable_ohmdll.txt” should appear on the goverlay folder
3. Now run goverlay again and it will not attempt to load the ohm library.
